We organized the Scenario Contest on a Future Society with Superintelligence, with sponsorship from the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence (JSAI) and from a Toyota Foundation–funded project, “Science for Artificial Intelligence and Fiction: Extending the Imagination for Future Society with AI.” The contest invited the public to submit scenarios of future society up to 2050 and recognized the best of them. Its aim was a more flexible and deeper understanding of the future in which humanity lives with technology. Submissions are closed.

  • Call for entries. Each entry consisted of a timeline to 2050 and one to three descriptions (750 to 1,250 Japanese characters each) of particular periods on it. Scenarios from the worst to the best case were welcome. Entries were judged on importance, originality and plausibility, not on entertainment value. The deadline was the end of March 2024.
  • Selection. The 60 entries went through three rounds of review by a 12-member selection committee chaired by Hiroshi Yamakawa. Thirty entries reached the second round, and 13 were discussed in detail at the final online meeting on 22 April 2024.
  • Results. No entry was judged to merit the top award (Excellence Award). Eight entries received Honorable Mentions and four were named Selected Entries.
  • Awards ceremony. The awards were presented on 31 May 2024 in session 4H1-KS-10 of the 2024 JSAI annual conference, at Act City Hamamatsu (Hamamatsu, Shizuoka) and online.
  • Journal feature. The JSAI journal Jinko Chino (vol. 39, no. 5, 2024) ran a special issue, “Envisioning a Future Society with Superintelligence,” centered on the contest. It includes the awarded entries and a record of the awards ceremony. See the introduction to the feature (in Japanese).
